When I was a little girl my grandmother would make this delicious spiced loaf cake for my grandfather almost every 2-3 months as it was one of his favorite cake recipes. This recipe is a vintage one from the late 1960's and to this day, it is still a prized recipe in our family.
Grandma's Delicious Spiced Loaf Cake Recipe
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2/3 cup milk
In a large mixing bowl cream together the shortening & sugar. Stir in the large eggs and then beat with an electric mixer. In another bowl sift together the flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Pour the flour mixture a little bit at a time into the cream mixture alternating with a little bit of milk. Stir the batter until all ingredients are well combined. Pour batter into a well greased 8" by 8" square baking pan and bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 1 hour.
