Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies Recipe
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup. granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Colored Sugars or Sprinkles
Colored Cake Frosting (I used orange)
Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until creamy and smooth. Add in the large egg, beat until fluffy. Stir in the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt and ground cinnamon until well blended. Form dough into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap or place into a large zipper close gallon-sized bag. Refrigerate the cookie dough for 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Separate the dough into manageable portions. Lightly dust a dough board or cutting board with all-purpose flour to prevent sticking or roll out the dough onto parchment paper. I used a circle cookie cutter to cut mine out but you could also just drop them onto the baking sheet with a spoon and flatten them slightly to get the nice round shape.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 7-8 minutes or until they are lightly browned. Let cookies stand on cookie sheet for 1-2 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool. Once they are completely cool cover the tops with frosting. I used orange frosting and then sprinkle colored sugars or sprinkles on the top. Let the tops of each cookie firm up a little bit by placing them back onto a cooled baking sheet and refrigerating for 10 minutes. Remove and place them into an air tight container.
